Complete Visa Application Guide

Obtaining a visa is a critical step in preparing to study in China, as it ensures you can successfully enter the country and begin your academic journey. Today, we have prepared a comprehensive guide to applying for a student visa, hoping it will be helpful to you!”

  1. Types of Student Visas 

If you’re planning to study in China, you need to apply for a student visa. There are two categories: the X1 visa and the X2 visa.

For an X1 Visa:

X1 Visa For students who will be studying in China for more than 180 days.

For an X2 Visa:

X2 Visa For students who will be studying in China for 180 days or less.

2. Required Documents for Student Visa Application

When applying for a student visa, you’ll need to submit basic application materials along with other supporting documents.

    • Passport: Your original passport must be valid for at least six months and have blank visa pages, along with a photocopy of the passport’s photo page.
    • Visa Application Form and Photo: Complete one “Visa Application Form of the People’s Republic of China” and attach a recent, passport-sized, color photo with a light background.

      Typically, you can fill out the form online and schedule an appointment through the Chinese Visa Application Service Center or the Chinese embassy/consulate website in your country. Check with the local Chinese embassy or consulate for detailed information.

    • Legal Stay or Residence Proof (for applicants outside their country of nationality): If you’re applying for a visa outside your home country, provide the original and photocopy of valid proof of legal stay, residence, work, or study in the country where you’re applying.
    • Original Chinese Passport: If you were born in China (including Hong Kong, Macao, and Taiwan) and later became a foreign national, provide your original Chinese passport and photocopies of the photo and extension pages (if applicable) when applying for a Chinese visa for the first time.
    • Proof of Name Change: If your name on the new passport is different from the original passport, submit official proof of the name change.
    • Original Chinese Visa: Foreign nationals born in China who have previously obtained a Chinese visa must provide photocopies of the photo page of the original passport and the previous Chinese visa when applying with a new foreign passport.
    • Other Supporting Materials:

      (1)Admission notice issued from the Chinese university.

      (2)Confirmation Form for Study in China (JW201 or JW202) or Short-term International Students’ Information Form (DQ).

Tips:

*After entering China with an X1 visa, you must apply for a residence permit at the local public security bureau’s entry and exit administration office within 30 days.

*The validity period of the X2 visa is stated on the visa page. You can stay in China for the specified number of days from the date of entry, up to a maximum of 180 days. With an X2 visa, you do not need a residence permit, but you can only enter China once.
